What is changing
The Gambling Commission has announced new standards intended to improve gaming machine fairness and consumer protection. New category B machines will need improved access to gambling management tools and information showing session duration and net wins or losses. Relevant session information will also be available to licensees to help them identify and respond to signs of harm.
Design and implementation
The measures include preventing celebrations of awards below the stake and prohibiting features that let a customer shorten the time before a result is known. Existing machines are exempt because of the complexity and cost of technical changes. Implementation is staged, with most changes due in June 2027.
Read the scope carefully
These are British gaming machine standards. They should not be interpreted as a universal rule for every terminal or an immediate retrofit obligation. The regulator says consultation feedback informed changes to the proposals, including consideration of privacy, operational burden and the risk of too many alerts.
EDITORIAL CONTEXT
For a manufacturer, session information is an interface issue as well as a data issue. For an operator, the practical question is what happens after information is available. Our reading is that the announcement makes the relationship between product design and staff intervention especially important; it does not prove that a particular design will reduce harm.
