The headline figures
Great Britain’s customer-facing gambling industry generated £17.5 billion in gross gambling yield in April 2025–March 2026, according to the Gambling Commission. That represents growth of 4.4% from the preceding financial year and includes reported lotteries. Excluding lotteries, the figure was £13.2 billion, up 4.7%.
Different channels, different patterns
Remote casino, betting and bingo generated £8.3 billion, up 6.9%. Land-based arcades, betting, bingo and casinos together generated £4.9 billion, an increase of 1.1%. Total licensed premises fell by 2.0% to 8,081. These categories should not be read as casino-only totals.
The underlying evidence
The statistics are based on returns from licensed operators. The Commission published the annual series alongside quarterly industry data and a new wave of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain. The regulator cautions that market shifts are complex and benefit from examination through more than one source.
EDITORIAL CONTEXT
Revenue data and population surveys answer different questions. An operator return measures reported business activity, while a survey can investigate participation and experiences. Neither series should be used alone to claim why an industry grew or what happened to every individual customer. Cross-market comparisons also need consistent product definitions and periods.
